What to Expect During a Professional Air Conditioning Install
What Happens During an Air Conditioner Installation?
A professional air conditioning installation involves a site inspection, system design, electrical setup, wall mounting, piping, testing and certification. Depending on the system size, it can take from a few hours to a full day or more.
The Installation Overview
Installing a new air conditioner isn’t just about mounting a unit and plugging it in. It’s a coordinated job that includes electrical work, airflow design, safety testing, and precision workmanship.
At Precision Electrical & Air, we take care to get your air conditioning installed the right way!
Here’s exactly what to expect when you book a split or ducted system install with our Brisbane-based team.
1. In-Home Inspection & Quote
Before anything goes on the wall (or in your ceiling), we come out to your home.
We assess:
- Room size and airflow needs
- Wall types, roof access and structural conditions
- Best outdoor unit location for airflow and noise
- Switchboard capacity and electrical safety
- Drainage points for condensate
- Solar and zoning compatibility (if applicable)
This allows us to design the right-size system, confirm install logistics, and quote accurately.
2. Booking Your Install Date
Once you’re ready to go, we schedule the job. Typical lead times vary by season, but we’ll always confirm:
- Access needs (gates, pets, parking)
- Indoor work areas (keep them clear)
- Install duration estimate
- Anything you need to move (furniture, shelves, etc.)
We also lodge electrical work notices as required by Queensland safety regulations.
3. Installation Day: What Happens
For a split system (wall-mounted):
- Marking wall position and drilling entry point
- Installing indoor unit with proper clearance
- Running refrigerant pipes and control cable to outdoor unit
- Vacuum testing and pressure seal
- Securing outdoor condenser with anti-vibration mounts
- Connecting to switchboard (via its own breaker)
Install time: 3–6 hours, depending on complexity and access.
For a ducted system:
- Ceiling cavity access and unit mounting
- Routing ductwork to each zone
- Cutting and fitting ceiling vents
- Outdoor unit install
- Wiring to switchboard and control interface
- Zoning control setup and airflow balancing
Install time: 1–2 days, depending on the property size, roof access and zone count.
4. System Testing & Certification
After the install, we run a full system test to check:
- Refrigerant pressures
- Temperature output
- Airflow balance (especially for ducted)
- Control function and scheduling
- Electrical load testing
- Drainage check for leaks
We also provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety and ensure your warranty is valid.
5. Clean-Up and Handover
We clean as we go—and again before we leave. Expect:
- No leftover packaging
- No dust or debris
- All tools and ladders removed
- Clear run-through of how to use your new system
We’ll show you how to:
- Use the remote or controller
- Change filters (split systems)
- Adjust zones and timers
- Set seasonal modes for cooling or heating and the important dry mode!
- Know when to call us for servicing
FAQs
Do I need to be home during the install?
Yes. We need access inside and outside. Someone 18+ must be present for entry and handover.
Will my walls or ceiling be damaged?
No. We drill neatly and patch only where necessary. We avoid cavity damage and surface scars.
Do I need a new switchboard?
Maybe. If your board is full or outdated, we’ll quote a compliant upgrade.
Do I need council approval?
No. Residential AC installs don’t require development approval, but all electrical work is logged with safety authorities.
